Fagerdala Hull System
- a truly revolutionary hull
concept

The history behind the Fagerdala Hull
System
Back in the late 1980s, inventor Sven Jönsson was
wondering what to do about his 100-foot motor yacht,
sell it or refit it? Luckily, he settled for the latter.
Built in 1939 for Swedish industrialist Torsten Kreuger
to designer K. Ljungbergs specifications, in riveted
alloy on a Dural frame, she was the fastest and most
extreme vessel of her class. Powered by three Wright
Murling V-12 petrol engines, she could make no less
than 30 knots.
Badly buckled and in an awful state of
repair, a complete restoration was needed. Being the
inventor of the GMT and TDS teak-decking concepts in
1972, Mr Jönsson could draw on his long experience
of a broad range of glue applications. He focused on
developing a visco-elastic and completely water-proof
glue that could withstand the forces between a rigid
closed-cell foam sheet and a twisting and flexing metal
hull. After rigorous tests, supported by the Royal Institute
of Technology in Stockholm, and Professor K-A Olsson,
the refit was initiated.
A new superstructure was created out of
3 mm welded single-bent aluminium. There after, vacuum-glued
sheets of closed-cell foam were added. The foam surface
was then planed to shape. As required, additional layers
were glued on to create recesses and other design features.
Once reinforcing, fairing and painting were completed,
the result exceeded all expectations.
In 2005, after 14 years of service in
the Mediterranean and the North Sea, various areas on
the structure were opened up to see how well the concept
had worked in practice. At a bottom section below the
engine room, one metre square of foam had separated
from the metal. The reason was found. The aluminium
primer had dissolved caused by a broken rivet which
allowed oily bilge water to penetrate the hull plating.
All other surfaces were like new!
